THE REVOLUTION FITNESS NEWSLETTER vol.1 issue 2 March/April 2008

NOTES FROM DEREK
Dear Athletes,
The Revolution is NOW! After a total renovation, numerous changes, and exciting additions, we are proud to open our doors each day and welcome the athletes of the Revolution.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all current Revolution Fitness members for their loyalty and patience throughout the transition process. And we are thrilled to welcome all new members to the RevFit workout community.
We invite all of you to take advantage of the opportunities we offer for you to enhance your health and fitness. In addition to existing classes and training, there will be exciting small-group exercise programs debuting in the near future!
Other exciting programs will be announced in coming months, especially with the addition of some incredible team members from Body Evolver, just around the corner. We welcome trainer Mike D’Angelo and his Body Evolver community to RevFit.
It’s a monumental time to be part of Revolution Fitness. Life, liberty, and fitness for all!

SPOTLIGHT ON NEW GROUP EXERCIZE INSTUCTORS

Ben Booth brings to group exercise his natural artistry and wealth of experience in the martial arts, yoga, and Zen meditation.  Ben, who teaches Sasoma Yoga and Muay Thai Kickboxing at RevFit, has studied with great masters throughout the U.S., India and China, including with the legendary kung fu monks of the Shaolin Temple.  While living in India, Ben studied with the guru of ancient healing, martial, and moving art of Kalaripayattu at C.V.N. Kalari in Kerala.  He has also studied Shivananda yoga and the yoga philosophy of Patanjali in traditional ashram settings.  In terms of western athletics, he has experience with crew, open-ocean rowing, and mountain bike racing. Ben currently studies with Korean Zen Master Chang Sik Kim, founder of the Buddhist martial art Shim Gum Do.

Autumn Halazon, who comes to Revolution Fitness from the Seattle workout scene, has worked in the fitness industry for the past eight years.  Autumn is certified through ACE and Johnny G Spinning, and she apprenticed at the University of Idaho for two years in Pilates.  Through attending numerous conferences and teaching workshops all over the United States, as well as in three other countries, Autumn has furthered her group exercise knowledge and passion.  She believes in helping others get in shape while they have fun doing so.

Derek Notman is a certified Postural Alignment Specialist in the Egoscue Method.  Internationally, he has spent close to twenty years pursuing the study of philosophy, martial arts, yogic movement, and traditional body-based healing practices such as Thai massage, Energy Medicine, and Chi Kung.  He is firmly convinced of the body’s natural intelligence, design, and tendency toward balance and well-being.  Derek also holds a degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.  He teaches his unique SomaTai Yoga at Revolution Fitness and is available to work one-on-one with members for postural alignment and yoga.

Jolene Woznicki uses her base as a gymnast with 18 years of  experience to challenge members in her Pilates classes.  Jolene comes to RevFit from LA Fitness and Fitness Club in Connecticut, and she holds degrees from both Springfield College and Southern Connecticut State University.  She is certified through American Fitness Professionals, and she has over four years of Pilates experience.  Jolene says, “I love teaching Pilates.  It is part of my life.”
Trainer Tips: Push Press adds Power by Greg Cloutier
Recent research suggests that as we age we lose power, the ability to move our bodies or a weight quickly and, more so than strength, the ability to push a weight one time.  Loss of power is a combination of a decline in our nervous system’s ability to work well and the decrease in what are called type two muscle fibers.
We are also learning that it is power that helps us to perform everyday tasks better, as well as to perform sports with greater success.  Thus, adding some explosive power exercises into your routine will not only give you a new challenge, but you could increase your ability to perform everyday tasks or sports, build more of the type two muscle fibers, enhance your nervous system, increase balance, and kick-start some new progress in your fitness level. The push press is one of my favorite power exercises on which to start people because it can be learned quickly and involves the drive and transfer of forces through the body from the ground to overhead.  This exercise is much like the standing shoulder press except for how the movement starts.
Start with the bar in front of the neck at the collar bone and keep your shoulders back, chest up, spine neutral (slight natural arch), and head looking straight ahead.  Place your hands on the bar just outside of shoulder width and rotate your elbows slightly forward of your shoulders.

To begin, keep your body upright, squat down and back until you are at about a quarter-squat position, and then explosively drive upward with your legs, using this force and momentum to thrust the weight overhead.  The weight will shift to your toes as you drive upward, and your feet may even leave the floor an inch or so.  Hold this for a second, then lower the weight smoothly back to your collar bone, and repeat the movement.
Repetition range and rest time between sets will depend on your fitness goal, but I would recommend using a light weight or even a wooden pole to start and perform 8-12 repetitions, in order to learn the movement first, with one minute rest periods between sets.  Always stop the repetitions when you can no longer keep good form.

Remember:  Always consult with your physician before starting any new or rigorous exercise program, and stop an exercise if you feel light-headed, nauseous, or dizzy.

For more instruction on this exercise and exercises that are both explosive and power-building, try one of Steve Trussell’s CrossFit classes.  Both Steve and the workout challenge will inspire you! For more info: steve@revfitboston.com
